When choosing the size of a battery cable to power your electrical system or project, it is important that it is sized appropriately. As electricity flows through a cable, there is an inherent resistance to the flow of that electricity which will generate heat in your battery cable and manifest itself in the form of what is called a voltage drop. Voltage drop is simply the voltage seen at one end of the cable minus the voltage seen at the other end of the cable.
This voltage drop is influenced by the diameter of the copper conductors inside the cable, and the total length of the cable – The longer the battery cable is, the higher the voltage drop will be, and the larger the diameter, or gauge AWG of the battery cable, the less the voltage drop will be. Why is voltage drop important? At the source, or battery, you will read 12 volts using a voltage meter, but at the other end of the cable your voltmeter will only read
This is the 3-wire version of the volt meter, two wires are used to power it and the third wire is used for measurement. We also have a 2-wire version that measure it’s own power supply. Simply connect the red wire to a positive power supply from to 28VDC, and brown or black to the common ground to power the display.
The introduction of the Power Probe Hook with its advanced testing functions raised the capabilities of Power Probes to a whole new level, and the recent addition of the Power Probe IV, with its numerous improvements over the PP3, adds yet another new dimension to the Power Probe line up. They all have power cables at least 20 ft. All three also have bright LED headlamps for illuminating your work area. The differences — Power and Ground capabilities.
Activating the rocker switch will supply power or ground from whatever voltage battery you are connected to. The Hook can connect to and can supply up to 48 volts. The Hook has an adjustable electronic circuit breaker that can be set to any fuse rating from 2 to 65 Amps that not only trips instantaneously but resets and reapplies power automatically.
Do you hook up positive or negative first
Please don’t forget to click on the links in this article, you will be amazed with the diagrams. This guide provides information on alternators, voltage regulators, ignition coils, belts and pulleys, mounting brackets, dash gauges and other accessories and devices. The Delco 10SI alternator is the top choice for a volt alternator conversion.
Automotive Relay Tester is perfect to test automotive relay. 1 Automotive Relay Tester. Tester uses 12V power from car battery. Tests three of the most popular relay types.
There was a time when all an electrical system really had to do was run an ignition system, headlights, tail lights, and maybe a radio or AC blower. Now, drivetrains are shot through with electron-driven devices; fuel pumps, interior accessories, lighting and computers all run on electricity now. Ironically, real voltmeters are one of those things that seem to have disappeared even as electrical devices have exponentially proliferated.
Installing an aftermarket gauge is fairly simple as such things go, but you will have to spend some time looking for the right wires to run it. Mount the voltmeter with the screws provided. On the back of the voltmeter, there are two connections — one is positive and the other negative. Take careful note of which is which. Hook them up backward, and the voltmeter will work backwards, indicating a discharge when in fact it is charging. The harness can be seen coming out of the steering column and going into a rectangular connector close to the column.
Probe the connector for a wire that has power with the key off and does not drop to 0 when the engine is started. The large, gauge yellow wire is the starter and will not have any power except when the starter is engaged. Never mess with a yellow wire with a bold black stripe around it. Mechanics call it the yellow jacket wire because, because it’s part of the air bag system.
Look for a grounded accessory wire.

How to Test a Car Amplifier by Derek Odom Testing a car amplifier to see if it works is not necessarily a complicated task, but there are some key things to keep in mind. When hooking up any electrical item to your vehicle’s system, make sure you have the polarities correct to avoid costly damage. If the amplifier has obvious burn marks or melted components, it cannot be recommended to test out on a vehicle.
Here is a step-by-step method for testing a car amplifier. In order for an amplifier to work, it must have 12 volt power coming in, and a good ground.

For most people it is only a matter of lack of knowledge, perhaps followed by getting some bad information. How the coil works with points and condenser to create a high voltage spark is covered in another article. This article is a discussion about electrical polarity of the coil and spark plugs. The ignition coil is essentially a low voltage to high voltage transformer with about to 1 ratio of windings and voltage. The coil case is not grounded, and both primary and secondary windings inside are “floating” or isolated from the case.
The only thing the windings have in common is one end connected to the same primary terminal, and it really doesn’t matter much which one. Being a transformer it must have pulsating or alternating current to work. Initial pulsating is done by connecting and disconnecting the primary circuit ground connection.
Alternating current then comes into the function in a big way by electrical “ringing” in the condenser at very high frequency. A transformer is not affected by polarity, since it is an alternating current device, so it matters not to the transformer what the input or output polarity may be. Any polarity on the primary side and any polarity on high tension side will produce the same quality of spark.
How To Wire Cooling Fans, Headlights, Fuel Pumps & Voltmeters
But if you insist on using an amp meter, here’s the information. The most important feature of the amp meter is that it is a low resistance high current device. It must be installed in series with an electrical load to limit current flow.
Hook them up backward, and the voltmeter will work backwards, indicating a discharge when in fact it is charging. 2 Use gauge wire for the hookup if the wire was not provided with the voltmeter kit.
How do you hook up a battery to a 78 Chevy? Alot of cables have other connections on them ie. If your black cable for example, has an extra small black wire on it – it too needs to be attached to the same place or near by to the chasis grounded Good Luck. You probably will destroy the diodes in the alternator and any other electronic equipment that includes transistors or diodes. You hooked up the starter and hooked back up the battery and the car rolls over by itself and you cant shut it off what did you do wrong?
You hooked up the wires backwards on the starter go in and change them. That or you got the wrong starter. Replaced a battery and hooked it up backwards it sparked and then hooked it up the proper way and the car started the next morning the battery was dead bought a new battery same thing happened help? You hooked up the batteries in Series whch pumped allot of current thur the circuit..
When disconnecting a battery always disconnect the ground cablefrom the battery first. When connecting a battery always connectthe ground cable to the battery last. How do you hook up battery in neon?

An old-style test light that uses an incandescent lamp as an indicator can read: These wires are generally but NOT always marked with yellow loom or tape and likely have yellow connector housings. If you hit the wrong sensor wire and trigger ALL of the airbags, there may be enough damage that the vehicle may be totalled from the cost to replace the bags and the affected trim panels. Some airbag systems destroy the entire dash, the door panels and even parts of the seats when they deploy.
Wiring an alternator. This diagram shows how to wire a Delco (GM) internally regulated 3-wire alternator. This particular model (10SI, used in the s and early 80s) is the one you’ll find on the generation of GM cars most often used in demolition derbies.
I’m looking to install a right hand tail light and turn signal for safety reasons on my Tudor. Since it’s a , it has the drum tail light with the cast bracket attached to the rear body subframe. I’m looking for the location dimensions for the 3 holes on the right hand side to mount the new RH bracket? Bratton’s Also any information on the clinch nuts to install in the subframe rail would be appreciated. I’ve found nothing on this topic at all; been a real challenge.
I can find no source for mounting instructions for a RH tail light. I did find that the mounting positions for the LH tail light vary significantly from body to body and year to year of the Model A. I have mounted several RH tail lights on my cars and have taken careful measurements for the mounting position for the tail light on the left rear of the car and replicated that position to right rear of the car. Since the holes are covered with the mounting brackets, I suggest that you remove the brackets prior to taking measurements so that you can find exact distances to the center of the holes.
Measure twice and drill once. The body Clinch-Nuts are found throughout the body and are used to join and mount various components. There is an excellent illustrated article titled: The only thing is they put a 12 volt alternator that reads 12 volt negative ground. I have the car at a friend’s house waiting to make space to bring it home so I have not gone through it yet.
Automotive Electrical Testers & Test Leads
When installing any electronic device in a vehicle, you will always be presented with the task of powering the device. This tech tip will help you find the following power sources: If you do not know how to use a multi-meter, have a look at the tech tip which covers the use of a multi-meter. In all cases, we will be looking at the ignition wires for our 12v sources.
Parasitic Draw Testing I like to hook up a break out box to the data link connector and scope the computer data lines to see if any of the modules are awake. A very good method of finding circuits with current flowing is to use a digital voltmeter and test the voltage drop across each fuse in the vehicle until the problem circuit is found.
Is there a way to test the flasher unit before fiddling with other things? And just out of curiosity, how does the flasher unit work? Click for larger picture and yes I know there’s a wire loose. If the terminals are not marked you can check it with a test light or ohm meter. The “P” terminal will be open circuit at rest, and the other two terminals are functionally interchangeable. The canister does not need to be grounded, but it does need to have the correct electrical load to operate properly.
And yes, you can test it by itself, but you do need to use the correct electrical load for the test. The flasher only works properly when it is driving two 21 watt lamps in parallel for the turn signals of course.

What is a blower resistor? Blower resistors are resistors which are used to control the fan speed of automotive blowers. The fan speed can be changed either by switching the blower resistor resistance mechanically, using a rotating lever, or electronically by the air conditioning system. The change in resistance then limits the current through the motor, which dictates the speed at which the blower fan works. This article will focus on mechanical blower resistors, their construction and troubleshooting.
You can either track down a wiring diagram for that specific make, model, and year, or you can grab an inexpensive multimeter, which is an essential tool for DIY car stereo wiring projects, and an AA battery, and figure it out on your own.
A voltmeter is a great accessory that will help you determine how well your car’s battery and alternator is working. The voltmeter will be able to tell you how the alternator is operating in conjunction with keeping the battery charged. Keeping an eye on the voltmeter in your car will tell you whether or not the alternator is bad. When the alternator is good the battery will remain at a constant 12V rating.
The opposite also means that the alternator is bad. If the voltmeter shows that the amps is up around 16 or more, it means that the alternator is not regulating the power well and needs to be replaced. Here are the steps to take to wire a voltmeter for your car. Determine Voltmeter Location Your voltmeter should be located in a place where you can see it easily without having to take your eyes too far away from the road. Above the dash, on the left hand side, near the corner of the windshield is a good place.
Of course, you can place the voltmeter under the dashboard on the right hand side. Attach Voltmeter The voltmeter will have a small mounting bracket that needs to be attached in order to mount the voltmeter. This simply attaches with the supplied screws.

Car Battery or Alternator: How to Tell Where the Problem Lies January 27, Almost all of us have experienced the problem where either your car battery or alternator just conks out, and you can’t make out which one to replace. Its not easy finding out exactly which part of your car is giving you the trouble, but here are a few tips by which you can find out whether you have car battery problems or alternator problems. Check Your Battery First Start by checking your battery first.
In cold weather, it’s very common to have a dead battery that just won’t start. Check the battery gauge on the dashboard to make out if the battery is sending a charge even when you have switched off the car.
The diagrams on these pages show just some of many typical relay uses, as well as how to hook up the universal ISO relay sold by M.A.D. Enterprises, Jacobs Electronics, and other electrical suppliers.
I bought a digital blue led voltmeter on Ebay to display the voltage of my golf cart’s main battery pack. It has a red and black power in, which will be powered by a 12v deep cycle battery that runs my accessories like lights and stereo, and a white wire to measure the 48v battery pack voltage. The wiring diagram shows that you are supposed to connect the black negative wire to the negative of both the power source my 12v accessory battery and the voltage to be measured my golf cart’s 48v battery pack.
My question is- isn’t this going to cause some problems with both sets of circuits if they share the same negative? Will is casue 48v to infiltrate my 12v system and fry everything, or will it be okay since the circuit is not complete? What about the seperate charging systems they use? Will this lead to false readings by my automatic charger on either side?
Right now the two circuits are completely independent of each other, and I am very hesitant to connect it as directed. Thanks for the answer, but the voltmeter has a positive and negative to power the unit, between 5 and 30 volts. It measures voltage via the white wire to the positive on the 48v pack, but the diagram asks me to share the common negative with both the 12v negative and 48v negative- that is the question.
